Dining in the Copper Age

Domaine Sigalas offers an exquisite culinary journey back to the time of Santorini during Bronze Age, by creating a unique dinner of five courses prepared in ceramic pots on an open wood-fired hearth, served in the beautiful and peaceful surroundings of the winery’s vineyards. A selection of our finest wines, produced from the oldest grape varieties of the island, dating back to the 12th century B.C., will be available to accompany your dinner.

The preparation of the dinner starts quite early, around 3.30 p.m., by igniting a fire at the open hearth. The ceramic pottery used in the cooking process, such as the tripod pots, the grilling stands, the oven, etc., are handmade replicas of the ancient cookware found during the excavations of the prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri. We use only high quality, seasonal, organic produce, that we cultivate ourselves or is provided by independent local farmers.

The ceramic pots are being heated slowly and when the initial preparation of each dish is completed, they are being put again on the open hearth. The food is cooked very slowly allowing all its natural flavors and aromas to be released.

Even though there are no written cooking recipes of that prehistoric age, archaeological finds are sufficient to enable us to experiment within this historical culinary context to provide a valid interpretation of the food people used to eat on the island before the volcanic eruption.

This unique and authentic experience, offered exclusively by the Domaine Sigalas, can welcome small groups up to 4-8 persons, as the slow cooking with ceramic pots on open hearth is quite particular procedure. The small number of guests provides, also, the ground for a profound discussion on food in the archaeological context of that time.

Dinner is served a bit before the radiant Santorini sunset at 8 p.m., but you are more than welcome to attend the cooking procedure from 6 p.m. and tour our vineyard.

Please make your reservation at least 36 hours prior to the dinner, as the guests’ seats are limited.

When making the reservation, let us know if you have any food allergies or intolerances and we will do our best to accommodate your special dietary needs.

The dinner costs 190 euros per person.
